A Lazy Day on Mingo River
Eleven East Ozarkers found that cool temperatures and sunny skies made a good combination when they took to the
river May 19th at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge. Apparently the snakes decided it was too cold to make an appearance since most of the floaters didn’t
see one. But the birds were abundant. Mississippi
Kites perched fearlessly in the trees and vireos harmonized from both sides of Mingo River
Nicole watched a mother hummingbird zig-zag into her nest, letting all the floaters back-paddle to get a look straight
up at the tiny creation. Unlike many Ozark float streams, Mingo River moves lazily from Monopoly Marsh
to dump into Ditch Six. The chapter float trip started from Flat Banks at 9:00
a.m. moving upriver a few miles and then back to the starting point at noon
Five canoes were supplied by the CCC Job Corps and
Steve Henroid brought his Kayak. Manning the canoes were Ron and Shirley Mullikin,
Gary and Nina Chastain, Joan and Nicole McKenzie, Jenny Gunn and Paul Gilgen, and Sue Hagan and Bob Lewis.
The floaters adjourned to the Mingo Visitors Center for a picnic
lunch, a visit to the center and a walk on the Boardwalk through the swamp.
Thanks to Virgil Harp and the staff at the Job Corps for their
help in supplying and transporting the canoes.
